about

White Noise – 1999, Electrical Audio, with Jim O’Rourke. Appears on the 1000 Pounds CD5.

Jon: I think this came close to making it on Come Pick Me Up. Had absolutely forgotten of its existence, but I really like this one.

Jim: Jim O’Rourke did a great job helping sculpt this one. He suggested deleting my guitar part until after the first chorus. I gotta say, the suggestion certainly improved things.

Mac: Played it live a lot before we recorded it, and I thought it was a keeper, but it became problematic during recording, just never quite gelling into what we wanted. I spent many frustrated hours at the piano in Albini’s studio B trying to come up with something that worked, with guidance from an invisible O’Rourke in the headphones. I was thinking Floyd Patterson but ended up with some amateur John Cale pounding instead. Took for-freaking-ever to mix, and then we told our intrepid producer it wasn’t even going on the album; he was nonplussed. It’s moments like these when you have to console yourself with the fact that you really like the feedback just before the guitar solo starts. And the outro is pretty.

Laura: I drank too much coffee during our time at Electrical. It was the first time I had unfettered access to a good espresso machine outside the confines of a coffee shop.
