about

The Mine Has Been Returned to Its Original Owner – 1996, Overdub Lane, with John Plymale. From The Laughter Guns EP.

Jon: The music for this was written primarily by Laura, hence its weirdness. Just kidding. The lyrics were inspired by a real-life land dispute involving one of our close associates.

Jim: This is possibly the only track in the band’s entire catalog on which Mac plays no guitar. The challenge of coming up with something appropriate to complement Laura’s extended (not to mention HEAVY) bass line was a challenge I think I failed to meet. I’m still awaiting punishment. Oh, yeah, and if I’m not mistaken, the lyrics are based in large part on some sort of shadiness involving our booking agent/protector Bob Lawton. But then again, I might be wrong about that.

Mac: You try writing a song with organ as the lead instrument when you’ve only ever played guitar. Now try writing it on top of Laura’s bizarro Breadwinner-inspired bass line. It’s a fiction involving a gardener, illegitimate children, and some sort of gothic family murder mystery, I can’t really explain it myself.

Laura: I seem to have a gift for writing bass lines that are difficult for guitar players to come up with accompaniment for. You should hear them whine! I like the way this turned out though.
