about

The Majestic – 1997, Echo Park, with John Plymale. From the Majestic 7”.

Jon: Recorded for Indoor Living. Producer John Plymale’s “rolling” is included as a tribute to his mentor Don Dixon who uttered the very same word at the front of R.E.M.’s “Second Guessing.”

Jim: One day we were standing around our practice space trying to come up with song ideas for the record that would be Indoor Living. I think we must have been stumped. As a gag, I started playing A B D chords with a sort of mock-rock bravado. Seconds later, Mac threw some David Mitchell (3Ds)-style guitar over the top. As they say in France, “Voila!” We had another tune destined to not make the final cut. Still one of my faves to play live.

Mac: I couldn’t remember where we recorded this—Jim had to remind me—I just think of it as “that single we did between records” that’s just as a 7” ought to be—amped up and concise and starts with a good drum fill. The drum fill and the outro really are the best parts of this song.

Laura: I have a horrible memory, and could not have told you when or where we recorded this song if my life depended on it. Live, I used to have a huge problem understanding that the song was indeed in progress when Jon did the drum roll that kicks it off. I think it’s a great way to start the song.
