about

Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) – 2002, Duck Kee Studio, with Jerry Kee. Appears on the 1000 Pounds CD5.

Jon: Recorded with Jerry Kee—the band’s original producer. After 10 years of doing records in exotic locales like L.A. and um... Indiana… it was nice to return to the small confines of Jerry’s house. We were tired of doing “Monster Mash” every Halloween so we decided to learn this one.

Jim: We learned this to play on a tour we were embarking on around Halloween. I think we played it all of two times.

Mac: We can all agree that Ziggy was great and everything, but to me the absolute best and still mind-blowing Bowie records are Lodger and Scary Monsters. When I was emailing Jim O’Rourke before we made CPMU and we were discussing references and recordings we liked, Scary Monsters was on the list. Tried to do it justice—when in doubt, rock it up a bit. It was fun to play the guitar solo.

Laura: Doing this song felt weird for some reason. Is it that I have Bowie on too high a pedestal? We wound up doing “Monster Mash” anyway. That was really weird.
