about

Freaks in Charge – 2004, Duck Kee Studio, with Jerry Kee. Appears on the Old Enough 2 Know Better compilation.

Laura: I remember rehearsing together and writing this one at Go! Studios along with “Everyone Gets Crushed.” George W. Bush was about to get re-elected. It was a scary time. The Freaks were indeed in charge. It seems pretty timely to put this out there again since Trump just got elected.

Mac: A song about raising kids in a world run by monsters.

Jon: I don’t remember this one at all, but surely I was upset that there were too many parts.

Jim: I’d all but forgotten about “Everyone Gets Crushed” and “Freaks in Charge.” Just listened to them again and it all came pleasantly back, though. I like how both have similar verse/chorus/verse/chorus/outro structures—with the verses sounding like they were cribbed from one of those ’80s British bands that Jack Rabid used to write about in his The Big Takeover zine (I’m talking Comsat Angels, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Sound, etc.)—the choruses coming in catchily at odds with what came before and the outros swinging for the anthemic fences. Or something.
