about

Becoming a Speck – 2001, Zero Return, with Brian Paulson. Appears on the Late-Century Dream CD5.

Jon: A great track that unfortunately didn’t make it onto Here’s to Shutting Up. That its intro is exactly the same as the first 8 bars of Hüsker Dü’s “Could You Be the One” only makes me like it more.

Jim: When it came time to sequence Here’s to Shutting Up, this song was competing for the same spot as “Act Surprised.” I think we all actually liked “Speck” better, but who can always say why things turn out the way they do.

Mac: One of two rockers that just didn’t fit with the vibe of the rest of Here’s to Shutting Up, but I really like this song, and once again we employ the old “outro catchier than the rest of the song” trick...

Laura: I hated this one at first, but it really grew on me by the time we got it all sorted out. Just goes to show, I can’t trust me. Part of my affection for it can be attributed to the fact that I sing a little, which I enjoy as long as I don’t have to maintain anything that qualifies as tunefulness.
