    Back in print! Superchunk has released Cup of Sand, their 2003 singles and rarities compilation on vinyl for this first time. The original CD packaging has been expanded for this edition to showcase Laura Ballance’s original paintings, and features expanded conversations with Mac, Jon, Jim and Laura about every track included—the ones they remember recording, anyway. The notes have been expanded to comprise the three additional songs from out-of-print compilations which have been added to this remastered reissue.

Jim: Here’s one that always brings tears to my eyes. So I guess it’s a good thing we never played it live. I can’t recall anything about this song’s conception, though after recording it and during the mix I remember coming to the grim conclusion that it was time to have my amp re-tubed.

Mac: Not wholly-successful attempt to fuse our rather stiff rock onto some kind of American Music Club-style lushness, never could make it work live though. This and the above three were all on The Laughter Guns CDEP, on the back of which was a photo of Jon that we somehow forgot to ask him if we could make the back cover photo—I still feel bad about it, but I still also think it’s a good picture!

Laura: Again with the memory! I am listening to this song for the first time in a while and I’m thinking, “Did I actually play that?” With some effort I recall that I was still making up my bits as we were recording it. I really like the vocals.
